"Greece 2021" Committee delegation visits Geraki in Laconia

The President of the "Greece 2021" Committee, Gianna Angelopoulos – Daskalaki, visited on Sunday, July 18th Geraki in Laconia, where the residents welcomed her with an impressive reception. Following the traditional custom, they hung their handwoven textiles, bands, carpets, rugs, and other handicrafts created by the old traditional upright looms. The weaving handcraft of the Upright Loom of Geraki has been included in the National Index of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Greece since 2019.

The "Greece 2021" Committee delegation visited Geraki on the occasion of the Experimental Teaching Foundation for Textile Art opening. In the foundation, 29 people from Geraki and the surrounding Laconia areas learn the art of weaving in an upright loom, among them 29-year-old Nikos Bariamis.
The objective is to protect and spread a tradition that is already 400 years old, namely to communicate the technique and artistic style of Geraki weavers through qualified teachers who, as time goes by, become scarcer.
